CONFERENCE LOCATION

SERGS 2022 takes place in the Western Gateway Building, University College Cork, Western Rd, Mardyke, Cork which is located just south of the River Lee and about 8km from Cork International Airport.

 

All of the Sessions, Exhibition and Catering will take place on the ground floor level of the Western Gateway Building.

On day two of the conference, the Networking Event & BBQ will take place in the The Kingsley Hotel, located a short walk from the University College Cork on Carrigrohane Road. All session locations can be found in the programme.

All of the recommended conference hotels are located walking distance from the conference venue:

  • The Kingsley Hotel: 10 min walk
  • River Lee Hotel: 14 min walk
  • UCC Campus Accommodation – Victoria Mills: 4 min walk

CONFERENCE ACCESS

Airport

Cork airport is located 6 km from the city centre and 8km from University College Cork. A taxi journey, with little traffic, takes approximately 20 minutes and costs approximately €20.

Train

Irish Rail is the company operating the train network in Ireland on behalf of the Irish government. Kent Train Station is the main station in Cork. To get the train from Dublin to Cork you have to go to Heuston Station, Dublin. Trains to Cork leave every hour, and details of schedules and fares are available at http://www.irishrail.ie/. It may be considerably cheaper to book train tickets online rather than at the ticket office in the train station. The journey will take approximately 3 hours.

Bus

Bus Eireann operate the bus services in Cork city. The number 205 departs from Cork Kent train station, and connects to UCC via the city centre’s St. Patrick Street, not far from Parnell Bus Station, the main bus station. The number 208 departs from the city centre St Patrick’s Street and stops at the UCC as well as several of the Campus Accommodation residences. Parking

Parking is available in front of the UCC Western Gateway Building and is available on a first come first served basis.

Language

The main languages are English and Irish and most signposts in the Republic are bilingual. English is spoken by everyone while Irish is generally confined to pockets of the south-west, west and north-western coastal areas. These are very interesting areas to visit if you have the opportunity.

Money

Ireland are members of the EU and the Euro is our currency. The Euro has 100 cents in the euro with coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 & 50 cents and 1 and 2 euros. Euro notes come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euro.

Foreign exchange bureaus are available in most banks, post offices, Tourist Information Offices, airports, some shops and accommodation. Bureau de Change kiosks are also situated in many towns and most cities. There are no exchange controls in Ireland. Any sums of money in any currency can be freely brought into or taken out of the country without disclosure or other formalities.

 

Time

From March to October, Ireland operates on GMT Greenwich Mean Time + 1 hour.​

Tipping

In Ireland, tipping is not expected but is appreciated. It is typical to add 10% to the bill in restaurants and hotels.

Smoking

Ireland were the first EU country to introduce the smoking ban. Smoking is banned in all public areas and work places, including restaurants, pubs and bars. Smoking is still permitted in hotel bedrooms which are specifically designated as smoking bedrooms by the hotel. Smoking in bedrooms in guest houses and bed and breakfast accommodation is at the discretion of the owner. There are substantial penalties in place for those found to be in breach of these regulations.

Tax

Refunds Value Added Tax (VAT) is charged at 23% on most goods. Cash back is the simplest and most widely used VAT refund service that issues cash refunds on departure for a handling fee. Ask for cash back form when you make your purchase.
